13 lakh metric tons of paddy production target in Sunamganj
If no natural calamity occurs and if the weather is favorable, the Department of Agriculture Extension expects to produce more rice than the target in the current boro season in 12 upazilas of the district including Sunamganj Sadar.
According to the sources of Sunamganj Agricultural Extension Directorate, Boro has been cultivated in two lakh 22 thousand 745 hectares of land in the district this year. Out of this, 60 thousand 860 hectares of hybrid, 1 lakh 60 thousand 565 hectares of high yielding and 1 thousand 370 hectares of local varieties have been cultivated. 200 hectares of land has already been harvested in some upazilas. The agriculture department expects to produce 1.35 lakh metric tons of paddy in the district this year.
Going to the ground, it can be seen that harvesting and threshing of early varieties of paddy is going on in various districts including Chandrasonarthal, Nalua, Chapati, Ruibil and Matia of Dharmapasha upazila. In these fields, the workers are harvesting paddy. Also, the combined harvester provided by the agriculture department through subsidy is processing the paddy in a short time and reaching the farmer's house. After harvesting the paddy, the farmers of Chandrasonarthal Haor take it to the river by boat. They are threshing and drying rice there. All the men and women of the family are now busy in rice processing. And the farmers are selling the paddy harvested with the combined harvester at the price of Tk 850 per maund. Meanwhile, the farmers of Dharam, Ganiakanda Rajapur, Shaitankhali, Dayalpur Daulatpur villages of Dharmapasha upazila have no time to lose their breath.
Mohammad Mokaram Hossain, chairman of Sukhair Rajapur South Union Parishad of upazila, said that with the initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, now the harvesting and threshing of Haor paddy is done by machines. That is why farmers can sell paddy from the land. Farmers of Daulatpur village could harvest paddy of 3/4 bigha of land in one day with labour. Now with the combined harvester, paddy can be cut, threshed and threshed quickly. All the work can be done by machines now, except the rice parboiling and drying.
Khushimohan Sarkar, Chief Engineer of Water Development Board Eastern Region, said the crop protection dam is protected. There is no forecast of rain in Haor area for the next ten days.
Bimal Chandra Som, Deputy Director of Sunamganj Agricultural Extension Department, said that early varieties of paddy are being harvested in some areas. The yield is also good.
Deputy Commissioner Didare Alam Mohammad Maqsud Chowdhury said that all kinds of initiatives have been taken to harvest Haor paddy quickly. Arrangements have been made to bring workers and combine harvesters from outside. Unless there is a major natural calamity, the haor crop can be cut and brought home without any hindrance.
