18th death anniversary of Abdus Samad Azad today
Today (April 27) is the 18th death anniversary of the first foreign minister of independent Bangladesh, language soldier, one of the organizers of the liberation war, close colleague of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, national leader Abdus Samad Azad.
Abdus Samad Azad Memorial Sangsad, Abdus Samad Azad Foundation and family have taken various programs on the occasion of the death anniversary.
The program includes- A visit to the deceased's grave and wreath laying at Banani, Dhaka at 9 am on behalf of Abdus Samad Azad Foundation. Leaders of Awami League and affiliated organizations will be present. In the afternoon, Quran recitation and prayer will be held at Kalabagan residence.
Besides, Milad Mahfil and special prayers will be held by various organizations in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Jagannathpur and Shantiganj.
Abdus Samad Azad was born on January 15, 1922 in Bhurakhali village of Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj. Served as President of Sunamganj District Muslim Students Federation in 1940 and served as President of Undivided Assam in 1946. He broke Article 144 in the language movement in 1952. Elected as an MLA from the United Front in the 1954 general elections and appointed as the labor affairs secretary of the Awami League. In 1958, he played an active role in the anti-Ayub movement and served as the office secretary of the all-party political alliance, the NDF. He was elected MNA from Awami League in 1970 election. He was one of the main organizers of the liberation war and the first foreign minister of independent Bangladesh. 75 later played a special role in the reorganization of Awami League and was a member of the presidium of Awami League until the last moment of his life.
In 1996, he served as a successful foreign minister in the Awami League cabinet. Abdus Samad Azad won Sunamganj-3 seat even though the party lost in the last election of 2001. He died on April 27, 2005.
