Three mayoral candidates will fight to SCC Election
Even though the official campaign has not yet started, Sylhet City's polling ground is buzzing with complaints. The candidates are raising various allegations against each other. Some have complaints about level playing field and some have complaints like 'Election Commission in favor of government party candidates'. All in all, it's a busy polling place.
6 mayoral candidates are fighting for the election. They are - Bangladesh Awami League nominated Md. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, Jatiya Pati nominated candidate Nazrul Islam Babul, Islami Andolan Bangladesh nominated candidate Hafiz Maulana Mahmudul Hasan and Zaker Party nominated candidate Md. Zahirul Alam, independent candidate Mohammad Abdul Hanif Kutu and Md. Shalah Uddin Rimon (Independent).
BNP is not participating in this election. As BNP did not participate in the elections, the current mayor and central member of BNP Ariful Haque Chowdhury announced the boycott of the election. However, after the announcement of the schedule, Arif and Awami League candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury gave speeches pointing at each other. There are counter-complaints.
Meanwhile, Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury appeared at Mayor Arif's Kumarpara residence on the night of May 28. He was welcomed by Mayor Arif and his wife Shyama Haque. Jatiya Party mayoral candidate Nazrul Islam Babul also met the mayor the same night.
Jatiya Party mayoral candidate Nazrul Islam Babul has alleged that the Sylhet Regional Election Commission office has acted in favor of the party candidate. His complaint - Sylhet regional election commission office is not neutral.
However, regarding Babul's complaint, Awami League mayoral candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury said, "I have nothing to complain about." I do not speak against anyone. Something to complain about.. You journalists are there to dig deeper. And if there is a yes from our side... Then I apologize.'
On the other hand, the nominated candidate of Islamic movement Hafiz Maulana Mahmudul Hasan has raised questions about the level playing field of the election. Mahmudul recently told the media, "There is still a long way to go before the election." Symbols are also not assigned. But in the meantime, the atmosphere has started to get murky. There are now concerns about a level playing field. An environment is being created where the candidate of the ruling party has to be forced to pass.
However, regarding this allegation, the boat candidate Anwaruzzaman said, "There is no chance of vote rigging." Those who are raising various questions are deliberately trying to question the election earlier.
According to the election schedule, nomination papers were submitted on May 23, and nomination papers can be withdrawn between May 25 and June 1. Sylhet City Corporation was established in 2002. There are 42 wards of this metropolis with an area of 79.50 square kilometers. The total number of voters is 4 lakh 87 thousand 753 people.
