Accused arrested for embezzling Tk 20 lakh through fraud

The police arrested Mamunur Rashid Tuhin Mamun, a dangerous fraudster of Sylhet. He was remanded to jail by the court on Thursday (March 30) morning.

ASI Mridul Das of Bianibazar police station arrested Mamun with his force from Bianibazar town area on Wednesday afternoon. An arrest warrant was issued against him by the court on the charge of embezzling about 20 lakh rupees from a young woman in Chatak. Detained Mamun lives in Sylhet city but his village home is in Pariabahar village of Lauta Union of Bianibazar Upazila. He is the son of Abdur Razzak of the same village.

According to sources, the detained Mamun is one of the masterminds of a fraud gang organized in Sylhet. In 2021, arrested Mamun and his accomplices extorted Tk 19 lakh 40 thousand from her family by staging a drama that a drug case was filed against a young woman in Chatak. Not only that, he married that young woman by concealing the details of his first marriage, showing the temptation to protect him from the lawsuit. In this incident, when the father of the young victim Feroz Mia filed a complaint in the court, the court took it into consideration and issued an arrest warrant against him.

In addition to this incident, fraudster Mamun is alleged to have sold property of about 2 crore rupees including a house in Sylhet city by bringing power of attorney to tick the land documents from his uncle.

Officer-in-charge of Biyanibazar police station Tajul Islam said that there was an arrest warrant issued by the learned court against Mamun. He was sent to jail by the court on Thursday morning.
