UN`s special envoy to visit Dhaka on May 17

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Olivier de Schutter, is set to visit Bangladesh from May 17 to 29. The purpose of his visit is to monitor the government's endeavors in addressing poverty and its impact on human rights.

According to Olivier de Schutter, an independent expert appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council to monitor poverty and human rights, Bangladesh has made significant strides in poverty alleviation. However, the challenge lies in preserving these achievements and ensuring equitable distribution of benefits across all segments of society. De Schutter believes that his visit will enhance his understanding of the subject, enabling him to offer guidance to the government on sustaining support systems amidst economic and climate challenges. The ultimate goal is to uplift people from poverty and secure a high standard of living for all.

During the visit, the UN expert will visit some places in Dhaka and Rangpur divisions and Cox's Bazar. In addition, De Shooter will monitor the effects of Bangladesh's labor laws, housing, and education systems on poverty to assess the effectiveness of social protection programs. It will also monitor the conditions of women, children, the disabled, the elderly, garment workers, health care, and Rohingya groups who suffer from poverty.

At the end of the visit, De Schutter will share his initial observations and suggestions through a press conference at Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon in Dhaka on May 29 at 3 PM Bangladesh time. In addition, he will present the final report to the United Nations Human Rights Council in June 2024.
