Expatriates’ minister discuss migrant workers` issues in Malaysia

Expatriates' Welfare Minister Imran Ahmad yesterday held discussions with Malaysian officials for sending more migrant workers, stressing upon safe and orderly migration.

During a meeting with Malaysian Human Resources Minister V Sivakumar, the visiting Bangladeshi minister discussed about sending more migrant workers, including housemaids and security guards to the Southeast Asian country in "shortest time", said a press release.

In a separate meeting with Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in Putrajaya, Imran Ahmad laid importance on widening Bangladesh's opportunities in Malaysian labour market.

Besides, they discussed about various other labour-related issues, including protection of Bangladeshi migrant workers and regularisation of undocumented workers. Officials from Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and the Malaysian ministries were present at the meetings.

After a nearly four-year suspension, Malaysia started to intake fresh workers from Bangladesh in August last year. Since then, about 1.5 lakh Bangladeshi workers have gone there for employment, according to Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training.
