High Court turns down Jahangir`s writ to get back his candidacy

The High Court bench rejected the writ filed by Jahangir Alam challenging the validity of cancellation of candidature for the post of mayor in the Gazipur City Corporation election.

The High Court bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Muhammad Mahbubul Islam gave this order on Monday (8 May). As a result, Jahangir is not participating in the Gazipur city elections.

Former Attorney General Fida M Kamal heard on behalf of the writ in the court. On the other hand, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin heard the state.

Earlier yesterday, on May 7, Jahangir filed a writ in the High Court challenging the validity of the cancellation of candidacy for the post of mayor in the Gazipur city election. The writ sought direction to withdraw the candidature.

On May 4, Jahangir Alam's appeal against the cancellation of his candidacy for the post of mayor in the Gazipur City Corporation elections was rejected.

Gazipur City Election Returning Officer Faridul Islam canceled Jahangir Alam's nomination for the post of mayor after scrutinizing the nomination papers on April 30. His nomination papers were canceled on the complaint of default.

Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League President Azmat Ulla Khan has been nominated by Awami League for the post of Mayor. Jahangir Alam collected nomination papers as an independent candidate without getting party nomination.

In 2018, Jahangir Alam was elected mayor as Awami League candidate in Gazipur City Corporation elections. The ruling Awami League expelled Jahangir from the party for his controversial comments about Bangabandhu and the martyrs of the liberation war. Then Jahangir Alam was dismissed from the post of Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation by the Ministry of Local Government.

Awami League pardoned Gazipur mayor Jahangir Alam on the condition that he will not violate the organization's interests and discipline in the future.
