President urges lawyer to play due role to ensure good governance

President Mohammed Shahabuddin today urged lawyers to play their due role to establish good governance in the country.

"The incumbent government wants to ensure good governance in the country ... Lawyers must perform their assigned duties in a proper manner," he told a view-exchange meeting with the lawyers at Pabna District Bar here this evening.

The Head of State added: "The present government believes in the rule of law. So the independence of judiciary has been ensured in the country". A former district and sessions judge Shahabuddin said the independence of the judiciary depends on the coordination of judges and lawyers.

"If there is a good relationship between lawyers and judges . . . the rule of law will be established then," he added. The President said purification strategy is very urgent here and the lawyers cannot assist the bench where corruption taints society.  "Lawyers not only assist judges in their legal profession but also sometime guide them," the former lawyer observed.

The President said laws are introduced for the welfare of common people and it is the job of lawyers to present the law naturally and give a clear and correct interpretation of the law.  Bar association leaders and senior lawyers were present on the occasion.

Earlier, the President unveiled the portrait plaque of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - "Bangabandhu Corner" - at the Pabna District and Sessions Judge Court premises.  Later, he visited the District and Sessions Judge Court Museum there.

Earlier, on his arrival there, the President was welcomed by judges led by District and Sessions Judge Begum Shamim Ahmed with a flower of bouquet.
