Admission to eight private universities ban
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is going to impose restrictions on the admission of students in eight private universities. The UGC is giving this ban on the basis of various irregularities including disputes over ownership, illegal campus management, not going to the permanent campus at the scheduled time.
Four of these universities have been banned since January 1. A new ban is being imposed on the remaining four. The regulatory body of universities will soon issue a public notice regarding the ban.
The banned universities are Ibis University, America Bangladesh University, The University of Comilla, Britannia University (Comilla), Stamford University, Victoria University of Bangladesh, Asha University of Bangladesh and Prime Asia University.
Among them, UGC is taking action against the first three universities for operating campuses illegally. In the rest, there are various irregularities including conflicts of the trustee board, not going to the permanent campus at the scheduled time. Soon the public notice will be published in media and UGC website.
When asked, Director of University Grants Commission (Private University) Omar Farooq said that this kind of public notice is given before every semester so that students-parents are aware of admission in private universities and can enroll their children knowingly. The public notice will state the overall functioning of the private university, the latest status of appointment of vice-chancellors, pro-vice-chancellors and treasurers appointed by the president.
In the latest approved public notification, the UGC will ban admissions in a total of eight private universities. Of these, three private universities will be declared 'illegal' and five universities will be ordered to stop admitting students. Apart from this, the UGC will mention the information to take action regarding one more university in the public notification
According to UGC sources, there are currently 110 private universities approved in the country. Among them, 102 are conducting educational programs with the permission of the Grant Commission. There are 70 VCs (Vice Chancellors) appointed by the President (Chancellor). The remaining 32 universities are run by vice-chancellors appointed by entrepreneurs.
Admissions in eight universities are closed due to complaints
According to the relevant sources, the UGC will ban admission in a total of eight private universities in the latest approved public notification. Of these, three private universities will be declared 'illegal' and five universities will be ordered to stop admitting students. Apart from this, the UGC will mention the information to take action regarding one more university in the public notification.
In the approved public notice, it has been said about Ibais University, America Bangladesh University and The University of Comilla, these three universities do not have any approved campus, address, any vice-chancellor, pro-vice-chancellor and treasurer appointed by the president. That is, there is no legitimate authority. As a result, according to the Private Universities Act 2010, these universities have no 'legal basis' to operate. As a result, the academic, administrative, financial, university admission, examination and results and 'academic certificates have no legal basis' of these three universities.
Regarding Britannia University, Comilla, the UGC said in a public notice, Britannia University has no VC appointed by the Chancellor since 2017 and no Pro-VC and Treasurer since inception. Absence of valid authority, inadequate number of teachers, shortage of qualified teachers, absence of teaching aids campus, insufficiency of required textbooks in the library and all the curricula of the University are out of date, the admission of new students to all the programs of Britannia University will be closed until further instructions from the Commission.

On the other hand, admissions of new students in Stamford, Victoria, Asha and Prime Asia universities have been closed from January 1 until further notice due to non-attendance at the permanent campus. Which will continue in the future.
Boards of Trustees at IBIS, Central University of Science and Technology and Britannia University (Comilla) are in conflict. Apart from this, several people have filed lawsuits in court claiming the ownership of these universities. which is still pending.
What is in the public notice
According to the public notification of the University Grants Commission, there are currently 110 approved private universities in the country. Among them, 102 universities are conducting educational programs with the permission of the commission.
UGC advises the students, their parents and all those interested in taking admission in private universities to visit the Commission's website (www.ugc.gov.bd) and take admission in the approved campuses and approved programs of the approved universities according to the number of seats decided by the commission.
