Suchitra Sen`s 93th Birthday Today
Iconic Bengali film actress Suchitra Sen’s 93rd birth anniversary will be celebrated today. Different cultural organisations in Bangladesh and Kolkata have arranged various programmes, marking the day.
The versatile artiste was born on April 6 in 1931 in Pabna district of Bangladesh.
Suchitra made her acting debut with the film ‘Shesh Kothay’ in 1952. But it was never released. The following year saw her work opposite Uttam Kumar in ‘Sharey Chuattor’ directed by Nirmal Dey. Suchitra worked in both Bengali and Hindi cinema. The movies in which she paired up with Uttam Kumar became classics in the history of Bengali cinema.
Her powerful performances in Bengali films ‘Sharey Chuattor’, ‘Deep Jwele Jaai’, ‘Uttar Falguni’,‘Saat Paake Badha’ and ‘Pathe Holo Deri’ made her a legend.
Suchitra Sen will be ever remembered for her outstanding performance in ‘Sharey Chuattor’. The film was a box-office hit. Suchitra acted in the film opposite legendary actor Uttam Kumar. The pair went on to rule Bengali cinemas for more than 20 years.
Suchitra is the first Bengali actress to get award at an international film festival at Moscow Film festival in 1963 as best actress for her role in ‘Saat Paake Badha’.
She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 by the Indian government. Notably; she refused the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’, the highest cinematic award in India, to stay out of the public eye in 2005.
The legend was awarded West Bengal government’s highest award ‘Banga Bibhushan’ for her lifetime contribution to Bengali cinema in 2012.
The legendary actress breathed his last in Kolkata on January 17 in 2014 at the age of 82.
