Legendary American musician Harry Belafonte no more

Legendary American musician Harry Belafonte has died. He was 96 years old at the time of his death. The artist breathed his last at his residence on the Upper Westside of Manhattan on Tuesday (April 25) local time.

Belafonte's spokesman Ken Sunshine told the media that the singer died of a heart attack.

Harry's contribution to the world of music is undeniable. Harry created a stir by singing folk songs in his own style. He did not confine himself only to music. Harry tried to break down apartheid in America by using his creations.

Belaphante was born on March 1, 1927 in New York City. However, eight years of childhood were spent in Jamaica by this legend. He later returned to New York but could not finish high school due to dyslexia. He did various strange things at the urging of his stomach. Joined the US Navy at the age of 17. At that time the whole world was on the brink of World War II.

At the end of the war, Belafonte dreamed of becoming an actor. He enrolled in that first acting class. At the same time he picked up the guitar. From folk songs to pop, jazz, he started earning in clubs in New York. Gradually, music became his identity. The first album was released in 1954. Then he saw the face of fame in the second album. However, the third album made history. The album called 'Calypso' impressed the Americans with its touch of Jamaican heritage. It was the first album to sell more than a million copies in America.

Belafante was married three times in his personal life. He and his first wife, Marguerite Byrd, had two children. One of which is actress-model Shari Belafonte. He also had two children with his second wife, former dancer Julia Robinson.
