Sharmin Shabnam joined Leicester University as a research fellow

Sharmin Shabnam, a child of Tahirpur upazila, has joined England's 'Leicester' University as a research fellow. He joined this post in the first week of this July. He was born in Ujan Tahirpur village of Sadar upazila. The village is situated on one of the largest banks of the district, Shani Hawarpar.

His father Haris Uddin (BCS, Administration) retired as Additional Secretary. Sharmin's mother Dilruba Akhter Lovely passed away three years ago. His younger sister Shaunil Binti is studying for a PhD in molecular biology at the University of Wyoming on a scholarship from the US government. Chotbhai Shahriar Shobhan completed his B.Sc in Computer Science and Engineering from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and is working in an IT institute.

According to family sources, Sharmin passed BSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET) in 2011. And in the same year, she joined Bangladesh Engineering University as the first female teacher in her department.

Later, Sharmin Shabnam obtained a PhD degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in America. Her husband Nazrul Islam is currently working as an associate professor at Southampton University. Nazrul Islam has previously worked as an Associate Professor as a Research Fellow in various universities including Oxford, Cambridge. Nazrul passed MBBS from Government Medical in Bangladesh. Later, he obtained Masters and PhD degrees in epidemiology and medical statistics from Harvard University in the United States and the University of British Columbia in Canada.

Nazrul Islam and Sharmin Shabnam, the World Health Organization and the United Nations' Covid-19 technical advisors, have several joint studies on Corona. Forbes magazine, BBC, CNN and Guardian published their reports and interviews about these studies. Also, their research has been published in many famous medical journals including New England Journal of Medicine, British Medical Journal, Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, European Journal of Public Health.
