2000 Bangladeshis applied for asylum in Romania

In the first six months of 2023, more than 5,500 asylum seekers applied for asylum in the European country Romania. Bangladeshis are at the top among them. In the first six months of this year, 2,999 Bangladeshis have applied for protection in the country.

Romania's General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) reported this information in a statement. More than 5,765 asylum applications were registered in Romania from January 1 to June 30, 2023, the statement said.

Bangladeshis are at the top among the asylum seekers. They filed 2099 protection applications. Middle Eastern country Syria is in the second position. Citizens of the country filed 880 applications in the first six months.

Apart from this, 752 asylum seekers from Pakistan, 399 immigrants from Nepal, 264 Sri Lankan citizens and remaining 1,371 citizens of other countries have applied.

Romanian authorities also reported that in the first six months of the year, 34,467 resident permits were issued or renewed to persons receiving international protection. A large part of this number are Ukrainians. Many of whose asylum applications were accepted last year.

Individuals with valid visas in Romania or irregular migrants can apply for asylum if they wish. However, the rate of receiving refugee status from South Asian countries in the country is very low. In most cases asylum applications are rejected.

In 2022, only 11 individuals from Bangladesh received asylum applications and were granted refugee status.

Last year, most asylum seekers in Romania came from Ukraine. 4,398 Ukrainians sought protection in Romania in 2022 due to Russian attacks.

In 2022, Indian citizens filed the second highest number of asylum applications after Ukraine. 1,284 applicants from the country have sought protection from the Romanian authorities. After Balkan country Serbia and Schengen country Austria, Romania also saw a surge of Indian immigrants last year.
