London lights up for the first time to welcome holy Ramadan

Central London's West End is decked out in colorful lights to welcome the holy month of Ramadan. 'Happy Ramadan' illumination connects Piccadilly and Leicester Square, the busiest road in Coventry, London.

On Tuesday (March 21) afternoon, London Mayor Sadiq Khan inaugurated the illumination by switching on the lights. Thousands of lamps carrying the words 'Happy Ramadan' lit up the streets.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said in a tweet, 'London is now the first major city in Europe to host a spectacular light show on the occasion of Ramadan. It's a true symbol of how we celebrate diversity."

London's educational charity Aziz Foundation has taken the initiative of such colorful lighting with the help of the city authorities.

On the project's website, founder of the organization Ayesha Desai says - 'As a child, seeing the festival lights was an annual treat in central London. My sister and I would lie in the back of the car and stare at the light through the sunroof. It was magical. This year, I'm very proud that our lights are on one of London's most famous streets - Coventry Street, the street that joins Leicester Square from Piccadilly Circus.'

Sabikun Nahar, a Bangladeshi student who came to London to study, said today is a very happy day as a Muslim. People of all religions live in this city, everyone will know about Islam. The festival of Mahe Ramadan has become known to everyone.
