Statement of Europe Bangladesh Press Club
The Europe Bangladesh Press Club strongly condemned and protested against the arrest of the country's top daily Prothom Alo's own reporter Shamsuzzaman in the CID identity and at the same time filing a case against the newspaper's editor Matiur Rahman under the Digital Security Act. Last Thursday, the president of the organization Zamir Hossain and general secretary Kabir Al Mahmud said in a joint statement that the issue that is directly related to the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh is independent journalism.
Without independent journalism, democracy is hampered. If someone is aggrieved by any news published in the media, there is an opportunity to get redressal from the government institution Press Council. But in these cases it has not been done which hampers the normal functioning of the media.
According to the statement, independent journalists of the world are concerned about this incident. Media workers representing Bangladesh in diaspora strongly condemned and protested. Immediate release of journalist Shamsuzzaman, Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman's case against Digital Security Act should be withdrawn and Digital Security Act should be repealed.
