Robbery by throwing trees, target expatriates
Cars are stopped by barricading the road by throwing trees and taking away all the belongings of the passengers. This is how the robbery has been going on for years. The gang targets expatriates coming to the country for holidays from the airport. After arresting two members of this gang from the capital, the police say that they have a network in at least 10 districts of the country.
Jassim, a resident of Bahrain, arrived in the country on April 1. He left for home with a hired private car from the airport. As soon as he reached Shimulia, Jasim was caught by robbers. Trees were thrown on the road and barricades were taken away.
Jasim said, 'The cycle first leaves trees on the road; Later attacked us. The driver comes and goes and says, "Donate with what you have, don't do business."
On the same day, an auto driver was also a victim of that cycle. He said, "Two-four people come and want to anger us. He asked to lower his head. Later we keep our heads down.
The detective police of Dhaka district investigated the incident and found a gang of robbers. After the arrest of two members, the police said that the gang targeted expatriates from the airport. They already have a bond with the drivers. Police Superintendent of Dhaka District. Asaduzzaman said, a circle centered on the airport is active here. Make friends with the microbus drivers before going anywhere.
He said, members of this gang hide in dark streets. As soon as the signal was received, a group of robbers quickly cut down the tree and threw it on the road. Later, other members of the group took the driver and passengers hostage and ran away.
The Superintendent of Police said that their gang was stationed around a secluded area. When expatriates go to the area, sometimes they carry out these robberies under the guise of police. They are looting everything they can get.
He said, apart from Dhaka, this cycle is active in at least 10 districts of the country including Comilla, Shariatpur, Narayanganj and Munshiganj. The police officer advised expatriates to take police assistance when returning home.
