Meta apologizes for Facebook’s auto-sending friend requests

Facebook’s parent company Meta issued an apology following a bug update that caused inadvertent Facebook friend requests.

“We fixed a bug related to a recent app update that caused some Facebook friend requests to be sent mistakenly. We’ve stopped this from happening and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused,” Meta said in a statement.

According to reports, Facebook users in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Philippines were particularly affected by the glitch.

Users claimed that Facebook was sending automatic requests to individuals whom they happened to visit their profile. They said they were receiving notifications from random individuals accepting their “friend requests”, even though they did not, as they claimed and insisted, send those friend requests.

This inexplicable action raised concerns among users about potential data privacy violations and digital consent breaches.

Notably, the glitch occurred after Meta started its latest round of layoffs focusing on technical employees.
