What is two-factor authentication and why is it necessary?
Using various types of online accounts, including Facebook, email, banking, and e-commerce sites, has become an integral part of our daily lives. As we are becoming increasingly reliant on the internet, online security has also become a crucial matter.
Ensuring the security of social media platforms or online accounts solely based on passwords is no longer sufficient, as there is always a risk of being hacked. To keep these online accounts secure, the 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) system is necessary.
If you have 2FA enabled on your online account, you cannot simply log in with just your password - you will also require the 2FA code. This means that even if someone manages to obtain your account's username and password, they will not be able to log into your account. If they attempt to log in, they will need the 2FA code sent to your mobile phone or email. As a result, your account will be more secure. Let's explore the specifics of 2FA in more detail.
How 2FA works
Normally, logging into platforms like Facebook, email, or any online account only requires a username and password. However, when you verify security at the second level after entering the password, you are using the 2FA method. Generally, two-factor authentication (2FA) or multi-factor authentication (MFA) is used to enhance online security. Nowadays, most online platforms provide the option to ensure this additional level of security.
To log in to any online account, you first need to provide a username and password. Then, in the second step, you'll be prompted to enter another code, which is obtained from the 2FA application software installed on your phone. Alternatively, the service provider can also complete the user's 2FA process instantly through notifications received via call, message, email, or mobile. You can log in to that account only when the second level of security is completed. Every time you log in, a new code is generated through the 2FA method, which remains valid for a few seconds. Once used, this code cannot be reused. This password, which changes every time, is called a one-time password (OTP).
2FA applications
Currently, the two most popular 2FA applications are Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator. You can easily find these apps for free on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Additionally, the 2FA system can also be used through the 'security key' method. To use 2FA, you must enable this option from the settings of your online accounts.
Along with using these applications, you need to link your mobile phone number or email address to your accounts. In case you face any issues with these applications, you can receive the OTP via mobile phone or email and use it to log in to your account.
