Rahul Gandhi sentenced to two years in prison
A court in Surat, Gujarat has convicted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case filed in 2019 for his comments on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sentenced him to two years in prison. However, Rahul Gandhi got bail from the court immediately after ordering the prison sentence.
Indian media NDTV reported this information on Thursday.
The case was filed against Rahul Gandhi by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi for saying, 'How Modi is the title of all thieves?'
Rahul made the comments while addressing a rally in Kolar, Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He said this linking Narendra Modi with fugitive businessmen Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi.
After the conviction, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed his disagreement with the verdict in a tweet on behalf of Rahul.
In this regard, Rahul Gandhi's lawyer said that the court proceedings were wrong from the beginning.
