The attack, which took place outside Pajigi village in Kanbalu town in Myanmar's Sagaing region, is seen as the deadliest terror attack since the junta took power in a coup two years ago.

Another 50 people were injured in the attack, according to the Kyunhla group present at the scene, according to CNN News. Besides, at least 20 children were also killed in the attack. Human Rights Minister Aung Myo Min even complained that medical workers were prevented from reaching the attack site after the attack.

The affected Sagaing region is about 110 kilometers (70 miles) north of Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city. After months of fighting, the region has mounted fierce resistance against military rule.

However, initial reports after the attack put the death toll at around 50. But later on Wednesday, the country's independent media reported that the death toll had risen to nearly 100. And now that number has reached 133 people.
It should be noted that the Southeast Asian country has been in turmoil since the fall of the civilian government led by pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a military coup more than two years ago. Myanmar plunged into turmoil after the military seized power from the originally elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. And as a result, massive protests and armed rebellions started in the country.

Myanmar's military is accused of using lethal force against its opposition. Even the country's junta government is increasingly carrying out airstrikes to counter the opposition's armed struggle. An estimated 3,000 civilians have since been killed by the Southeast Asian country's security forces.

A witness said scores of people gathered outside Pajigi village in Kanbalu town in Myanmar's Sagaing region at 8 a.m. Tuesday to mark the opening of a local office of the country's opposition group. The army directly attacked the crowd of people present.

The witness, who did not want to be named, also said that a helicopter arrived there about half an hour after the attack and opened fire on the crowd present at the scene.

The United Nations, the United States and others strongly condemned the attack and pledged to take action to hold the military accountable.
