At least 53 killed in army attack in Myanmar

At least 53 people have been killed in an airstrike by Myanmar's anti-junta armed group People's Defense Force (PDF) in an airstrike. Among these dead are many civilians.

The incident took place in Sagaing province, the central province of the country, on Tuesday morning. A PDF leader who did not want to be named told Reuters this information.

He said the event was organized in the morning at their local office compound in Sagaing. Suddenly, some warplanes of the military arrived there and started firing indiscriminately, injuring several people. Among these casualties are civilians.

At least 53 people were killed in the attack, BBC Burmese, the BBC's Myanmar branch, Radio Free Asia (RFA) and the Myanmar-based Irrawaddy news portal reported. However, the PDF leader could not confirm the exact number of casualties.

He told Reuters, "We haven't started recovering the bodies yet. So I can't say exactly how many people have died.

Reuters contacted ruling junta spokespeople for more information, but no spokespersons responded.

On February 1, 2021, Myanmar's military seized national power by ousting the government led by pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi through a coup. Army chief General Min Aung Hlaing led the coup.

Since then, the junta has continued to attack the pro-democracy people and political groups of the country from time to time. Last month, eight civilians were killed in an airstrike on a village in the northwest of the country. Among the dead was a child.
