Today is Portugal`s Independence Day
Today, April 25th is Portugal's Independence Day. On this day in 1974, a dictatorial government was overthrown in the country through a peaceful movement led by a revolutionary army. This government was in power for more than 40 years.
There were several reasons behind this revolution. Notable among these are the people's standard of living, public dissatisfaction with the government's policies and military dissatisfaction with the colonial war because they had been fighting in the Portuguese colonial countries for a long time.
On this day in 1974, troops led by Movimanto das Forsa Armadas, or Movement Group of the Armed Forces in Portuguese, took control of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, and quickly spread across the country.
The Portuguese citizens enthusiastically supported this revolution by participating in the military and shooting carnations at the rifles of the armed forces, hence it was called the Carnation Revolution. This revolution helped move Portugal towards independence and democracy.
The day is observed annually as Independence Day in honor of the soldiers and citizens who fought for democracy and human rights. It is a national holiday and around this day, various celebrations are organized at the national level in different parts of the country.
