Ayatollah Abbas Ali Soleimani, Iran's top Shia religious leader, has been shot dead. The incident took place in Babulsar city of Mazandaran province in the northern part of the country on Wednesday. This information was reported by the BBC on the state media of Iran.
The deceased Ayatollah Abbas Ali Soleimani was one of the members of the Assembly of Experts. The members of this assembly choose who will be the supreme religious leader of Iran.
The governor of Mazandaran province said the attacker was a bank security guard. He has been arrested. However, the motive of the attack was not known.
Members of the Assembly of Experts appoint Iran's Supreme Leader. This committee monitors the activities of the Supreme Leader and disqualifies him according to religious rules. It has 88 members. Ayatollah Soleimani was one of them.
Before this, he served as the personal representative of the current supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khomeini. He retired in 2019 after serving for 17 years.
Parham Ghobadi of the BBC's Farsi department said Soleimani was a hardliner. He gave gender divisive speeches everywhere. Even at work. On Wednesday around 10:30 am local time, Babulsar went to Bank Belly for personal work. It was at this time that he was attacked.
