Eid on 29th June

The holy Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest festival of the Muslims, will be celebrated across the country on June 29 as the Zilhajj moon was sighted in Bangladesh yesterday.

Celebration of the Eid on June 29 means the Eid holidays will be for five days as the government yesterday decided to extend the holidays by a day. The holidays will start from June 27.

The decision on the celebration of the Eid-ul-Azha came at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee at the Islamic Foundation last evening, with Religious Affairs Secretary Md A Hamid Zamadder in the chair. The Eid-ul-Azha is celebrated on the 10th of Zilhaj of the lunar Islamic calendar.

The committee made the decision after evaluating the data and reports from district administrations and offices of the Islamic Foundation, Bangladesh Meteorological Department, and Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation. Yesterday, a cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, decided to extend the Eid holidays.

As per the earlier announcement, the Eid holiday was supposed to be from June 28 to 30, subject to the sighting of the moon. As the Eid-ul-Azha falls on June 29, Eid holidays will be from June 27 to 30.

As July 1 is a weekend, this year's Eid holidays will be for five days. On June 13, a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order recommended extending the Eid holidays by a day.
