Gono Odhikar Parishad : Nur president, secretary Rashed
Nurul Haque Nur has been elected as the president of the first national council of a faction of Gono Odhikar Parishad with 135 votes.
Rashed Khan became the general secretary by getting 109 votes. According to the party, voter turnout in the election was 85%. Total number of voters was 216.
Besides, there were 18 candidates against eight posts in the higher council. The council began at the party's central office at Pritam Zaman Tower in the capital's Purana Paltan area at 12pm and continued until 5pm.
Three candidates contested for the post of president and five others for the post of general secretary. The other candidates for the president post were Bayezid Hossain Shahed and Nazam-us-Saqib while the other candidates for general secretary were Biplab Kumar Poddar, Mahfuzur Rahman Khan, Jilu Khan and Hasan Al Mamun.
On July 2, a four-member Election Management Board was formed to hold the election of the National Council and the Higher Council of the party. Ariful Islam, joint convener of Gono Odhikar Parishad, was made the chief election commissioner.
But Farooq Hasan, joint convener of Dr Reza Kibria-led faction of the party, alleged that Nur and his followers are holding the council illegally by force.
