Khaled Mahmud appointed team director for World Cup
Former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud has been appointed 'team director' for the ICC Men's World Cup 2023 by the national selection committee.
Earlier, Mahmud had insisted that he is not ready to return as team director, a post he left since the home series against India. However, Mahmud confirmed on Tuesday that he could not say 'no' to BCB president Nazmul Hasan's proposition for the role.
"Papon (Nazmul) bhai called me this morning and said that he is including my name in the team management list for the World Cup and I could not say no to him," said Mahmud.
Mahmud was part of Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha's team management during his first stint as national head coach, and the two share a good rapport.
Mahmud said that he is not too sure whether he will be included in the selection process or not though he was adamant that he was included in selection meeting when he was appointed as team director last time following their debacle in ICC World T20 in 2021.
Mahmud, who previously served as a technical director, had decided to step down from the position as he did not have any say on selection and planning prepared by head coach Russell Domingo and other members of the team management.
Later he was part of the team management that was guided by Sridharan Sriram in the shortest format after BCB decided to introduce split coaching, with Sriram looking after the T20Is while Domingo managed the Test and ODI cricketers.
