Action will be taken if anyone tries to spread rumours : IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun said that if anyone tries to spread rumors through social media including Facebook before the city elections and national elections, action will be taken against them according to the existing law.

He said this during an exchange of views with reporters at Sylhet District Police Lines Birmuktijoddha Shaheed SP M. Shamsul Haque Auditorium in Rikabibazar on Saturday (April 29) at noon.

IGP said, we have been holding elections for a long time. Police have enough experience and training to conduct elections. During elections we work under Election Commission. We will work according to the instructions given by the Election Commission.

He said, following the Prime Minister's policy of zero tolerance against militancy and terrorism, the police has been able to identify militancy and terrorism with everyone.

Regarding the recent fire incidents across the country, the IGP said, we have strict intelligence surveillance to prevent all untoward incidents before the elections. Apart from this, the investigation of these matters is continuing by the police. If anyone is involved in these incidents, strict action will be taken against him, he said.

When asked about spreading rumours, the IGP said that if anyone tries to spread rumors through social media including Facebook before the election, action will be taken against them according to the existing law.

In this regard, he asked for the cooperation of journalists and said that you (journalists) will help us with information to catch those spreading rumours.

Before interacting with journalists, the IGP was accorded a guard of honor when he reached the district police lines at 11:30 am. Later at 12 noon, IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun exchanged views with the OCs of all police stations of Sylhet division.
