Shy monkey caught again in Baralekha

A shy monkey has been caught again in Baralekha of Moulvibazar. People of Chukarpunji village of the upazila caught the monkey last Monday (01 May) in the evening.

The monkey was released yesterday Tuesday (02 May) around 8 pm.  Earlier, on the night of April 1, a shy monkey was captured by the local people from the south government primary school area of the upazila. Later that night the monkey was released.

Related sources said that the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) has redlisted the shy monkey as an endangered species.

Environmental activists say that due to the destruction of forests and trees, people often come out in search of food and lose their lives in the hands of local people.  In order to protect these wild animals, besides protecting the environment, the locals must also be made aware.

According to local sources, last Monday (01 May) local people saw a shy monkey near the culvert of Chukarpunji village of the upazila. Later they caught it and locked it in the house of Akmal Ali, a resident of the area.

As the monkey did not eat any food, the people of Akmal Ali's house released the monkey on Tuesday (02 May) around 8 pm.  Chanwar Hossain, a resident of Chukarpunchi village, said that the monkey was caught by local people on Monday evening.

Later the monkey was kept in someone's house. But the monkey was not fed and the people of the house released it around Tuesday night. After leaving, it went up the tree again.

Local environmental activist Saib Ahmad Yaser said on Wednesday afternoon that shy monkeys are often caught somewhere. Because forests and trees are being cut freely. As a result these animals are losing their habitat.

Food is in crisis. In this, these animals come out to the locality in search of food and are killed by the local people. But people are becoming more aware than before, so some are catching these animals and releasing them again.

In order to protect these wild animals, besides protecting the environment, the locals must also be made aware. For this, all concerned should come forward.

Baralekha range officer Shekhar Ranjan Das said, shy monkeys are nocturnal animals. Good for the environment too. does not harm anyone.

These animals should not be caught. If caught, let us know quickly. We will rescue. And if anyone is caught and killed, action will be taken against him as per the relevant law.
