Dawki land port will boost trade between India and Bangladesh

The land port on the Indo-Bangla international border at Dawki in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills will be inaugurated by Union minister of state for home affairs, Nityanand Rai, on Thursday in the presence of state deputy chief minister Preston Tynsong and the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh.

The Dawki land port is an important project of the Centre, aimed at promoting trade and commerce between India and Bangladesh. It is located in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, about 55km from the district headquarters of Jowai and about 84km from state capital Shillong. It is also one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. The corresponding land port in Bangladesh is Tamabil in Sylhet district.

“The Dawki land port serves as a vital trade and transportation hub between India and Bangladesh, facilitating the movement of goods, people and vehicles across the border,” an official statement said.
The development of the land port was approved by a High Level Empowered Committee of the MHA on February 4, 2016. The land port is spread over 23 acres.
