Chief Election Commissioner`s interaction with the candidates

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal is holding an exchange meeting with rival candidates regarding the upcoming Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) elections.

This exchange meeting was organized at Jalalabad Gas Auditorium in Mendibagh of the city on Saturday (June 10) at 10 am. The meeting is ongoing till the time of writing this report.

Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Dr. Muhammed Mosharraf Hossain presided over the discussion meeting, the Secretary of the Election Commission is present. Jahangir Alam, Sylhet Ilyach Sharif, Sylhet District Commissioner. Mojibur Rahman and Sylhet Regional Election Officer and City Corporation Election Returning Officer Faisal Quader.

Also Awami League candidate Md. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury (Boat), Jatiya Party nominated candidate Nazrul Islam Babul (Plough), Islami Andolan Bangladesh nominated candidate Hafez Maulana Mahmudul Hasan (Hatpakha) and other candidates are also present.

Besides, the officials of various departments involved in the election work participated in the discussion meeting. The meeting organized on the occasion of this election was attended by the mayoral candidates, councilors and reserved ward women council candidates.

A total of 8 mayoral candidates are competing in the final battle of the election. They are Awami League's Md. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury (boat), Jatiya Party's nominated candidate Nazrul Islam Babul (plough), Islami Andolan Bangladesh's nominated candidate Hafez Maulana Mahmudul Hasan (arms) and Zaker Party's Md. Zahirul Alam party symbol (rose), independent mayoral candidate Mohammad Abdul Hanif Kutu (horse), Md. Chalah Uddin Rimon (cricket bat) and Md. Shah Jahan Mia (Bus Car), Mushtaq Ahmed Rauf Mustafa (Deer).

And 360 candidates are competing for the councilor post. Out of which 273 women candidates are contesting in general wards and 87 in reserved wards (women councillors).

The election will be held on June 21. Earlier there was Sylhet City Corporation with 27 wards, but CCK now has 42 wards by increasing 15 wards. The number of voters in this metropolis with an area of 79.50 square kilometers is 4 lakh 87 thousand 753 people. Among them, 2 lakh 54 thousand 363 men, 2 lakh 33 thousand 384 women and 6 third gender or transgender voters. After the establishment of Sylhet City Corporation in 2002, this is the first time that all the wards of Sylhet are voting through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).
