Former City Mayor Kamran`s 3rd d e a t h anniversary today
Today is the 3rd death anniversary of Badaruddin Ahmad Kamran, former mayor of Sylhet City Corporation and former president of Metropolitan Awami League.
Kamran's followers have been holding various programs in the city for the past few days on the occasion of his death anniversary. A program has also been taken by his party Awami League. Metropolitan Awami League has organized Milad and Doa Mahfil at Hazrat Shahjalal (R.A.) Dargah Mosque, Bad Zohar.
On June 5 last year, 69-year-old Kamran's corona infection was detected in the lab of Sylhet's Osmani Medical College. Earlier on May 27, his wife Asma Kamran contracted Covid-19. When his physical condition deteriorated, Kamran was brought to Dhaka on June 7 and admitted to the Combined Military Hospital. He was also given plasma therapy there. Kamran, the first mayor of Sylhet City Corporation, died early in the morning while undergoing treatment there. He was also the chairman of Sylhet municipality for a long time.
Kamran at a glance
Badruddin Ahmed Kamran was born on January 1, 1951 in Sylhet. He was first elected ward commissioner of Sylhet municipality in 1973 while studying in high school. In 1995 he became the chairman of Sylhet municipality. In 2002 Sylhet Municipality was nominated as Mayor after its elevation to City Corporation.
He won the first election of the City Corporation in 2003 and retained the post of Mayor. Kamran, like many other politicians, was arrested during the military-led caretaker government in 2007-08. Kamran, who was at the peak of popularity at that time, won by a huge margin despite being elected from prison. Kamran lost the post of mayor after losing to BNP leader Ariful Haque Chowdhury in the 2013 elections. After that he fought in the 2018 election as well, but could not win.
After serving as general secretary of Sylhet city Awami League since 1989, Kamran became the president of metropolitan Awami League in 2002. He handled that responsibility for almost one and a half years. Kamran, who was appointed as a member of the central executive committee at the Awami League conference in 2016, held the same position until his death.
