SCC Elections: Campaign ends at midnight today

Today, Monday (June 19) from midnight, all types of campaigning for Sylhet City Corporation elections are ending. Elections are just one day away. Various last minute equations are going on with the vote.

Awami League candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury and Jatiya Party mayoral candidate Nazrul Islam Babul are advancing with different strategies to win. Various promises are made to win the hearts of the voters. There is an ongoing analysis of who will be the controller or factor in the victory or defeat of the mayor in the election.

8 candidates for the post of mayor in Sisik election. However, Islamic Movement of Bangladesh Hafez Maulana Mahmudul Hasan has already boycotted the election. Besides, Awami League's Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, Jatiya Party's Nazrul Islam Babul and Zaker Party's Zahirul Alam are competing in the party nomination. Among them, Zaker's party and independent candidates are not participating in the campaign. Their campaign in the city is not visible. Anwaruzzaman and Babul are now in the voting field.

And 360 candidates are competing for the councilor post. Out of which 273 women candidates are contesting in general wards and 87 in reserved wards (women councillors).

The election will be held on June 21. Earlier there was Sylhet City Corporation with 27 wards, but CCK now has 42 wards by increasing 15 wards. The number of voters in this metropolis with an area of 79.50 square kilometers is 4 lakh 87 thousand 753 people. Among them, 2 lakh 54 thousand 363 men, 2 lakh 33 thousand 384 women and 6 third gender or transgender voters.

In the city elections in 2018, there were 3 lakh 21 thousand 732 voters in 27 wards of Sylhet city. Among them 1 lakh 71 thousand 444 men and 1 lakh 50 thousand 288 women. There were 134 centers, 926 polling booths and 34 temporary booths. This time, there are 185 centers in 42 wards and 1 thousand 390 polling booths.

After the establishment of Sylhet City Corporation in 2002, this is the first time that all the wards of Sylhet are voting through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).
