Sylhet City`s new mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury
Awami League's boat symbol candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury has been elected the new city father of Sylhet creating history. This information is known in the results obtained privately from 190 centers on Wednesday (June 21) evening. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury of the boat symbol got 1 lakh 18 thousand 700 votes. His nearest rival, Nazrul Islam Babul of Jatiya Party's Langal Pratik got 51 thousand 200 votes.
United Kingdom Awami League Joint General Secretary Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury became a candidate for the first election this time. He has lived in UK for a long time. Nazrul Islam Babul, a businessman by profession, is the convenor of Mahanagar Jatiya Party. He has previously been elected as a councilor, but this is his first election for the post of mayor. Elections were held for the fifth time in this city in 42 wards with an area of 79.50 square kilometers on Wednesday from 8 am to 4 pm.
This time the total number of voters is four lakh 87 thousand 753 people. Among them there are 2 lakh 54 thousand 360 male, 2 lakh 33 thousand 387 female and six third gender voters.
Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said that 46 percent of votes have been cast in the Sylhet City Corporation (CCC) elections. The CEC gave this information in front of the journalists at the Agargaon election building in the capital on Wednesday afternoon.
