13 endangered vultures were killed by poison in Moulvibazar

13 endangered vultures died after consuming poison in Barakapan village of Ekatuna union in Moulvibazar Sadar. Apart from vultures, 9 dogs and some cats and foxes also died due to the same poison. They are believed to have died 5 to 7 days ago after ingesting poison left by someone.

On Thursday (March 23), wildlife workers and media workers went to the spot and saw these pictures. Moreover, a researcher working on vultures came to know about the death of vultures from Dhaka through satellite.

Going to the surface, it can be seen that three dead vultures are lying in the paddy field. Around it lay several dead foxes, dogs, and cats. Three bottles of pesticides are lying at the spot. Locals said that they have been lying on the ground for the past few days.

Locals said that there was an increase in the number of foxes in the area for a few days. Many goats have been eaten by foxes. Someone in the area poisoned the dead goat and baited it 5 to 6 days ago to kill the fox in Burikona field of Barakapan village of Ekatuna Union of Sadar Upazila. When the matter became known, the people of the concerned department attended the area.

A local resident said, I saw a dead goat here a few days ago. Then a few days ago I saw many vultures lying dead.

Shyamal Kumar Mitra, Assistant Conservator of Forests of Maulvibazar Department of Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation, said that the names and identities of those who have done such cruel work are not yet known. However, we are investigating the incident. Initially, it is believed that this incident happened due to the use of poison to kill foxes. We recovered 10 dead roaches from the spot and sent them to the Sylhet lab for testing. Came in today and found 3 more dead vultures. There are more dead foxes, dogs and cats lying around.

He said, we think the vulture died due to poisoning. But I can be more sure when the reports from Sylhet come. After talking to the locals and visiting the spot, it was confirmed that a goat had died here. It is then poisoned, the flesh of which kills vultures and other animals.
