Woman flogged on charges of adultery, arrested 4

The wife of an Omani expatriate was flogged in Habiganj's Chunarughat for having an immoral relationship. In this incident, 4 people have been arrested following the complaint of the female victim.

The arrested are Hafez Nurul Islam (35), Bayezid Hossain (70), Akbar Ali (68) and Atiq Ullah (50), residents of Barajum village of the upazila. Chunarughat police station (OC) Md. Rashedul Haque confirmed the matter on Friday evening.

It is known that Anwar Miah, a resident of Barazum village, is an expatriate of Oman. The villagers organized an arbitration trial on the night of April 4, accusing his wife of immoral relations. In the trial, the woman was sentenced to 82 lashes and stoning. Accordingly he was flogged. The woman was also banned from leaving the house for a month. The expatriate husband returned to the country last Thursday after hearing such news about his wife. He wanted to seek legal recourse for the trial of torture, but the villagers stopped the expatriate. At one point, the victim woman herself became a plaintiff and filed a complaint with the Chunarughat police station.

The victimized woman said that there is no basis for the charges brought against me. Some elders of the village exaggerated the matter and disgraced me in the society through the arbitration meeting. He said, since the incident, I am not able to leave the house due to shame. After my husband came home, the villagers are trying to mislead him too.

Chunarughat Police Station (OC) Md. Rashedul Haque said that there was evidence of whipping on the woman's body. It is not known whether stones are thrown and how many lashes are given. 4 people have been arrested in this incident. Police operations are on to arrest others.
