SCC Election : Roksana fighting for general councilor post
287 candidates submitted nomination papers for general councilor post in Sylhet City Corporation election. The nomination papers of six people were canceled in the selection last Thursday. Out of the remaining 281, only one is a woman.
Earlier, after the establishment of the City Corporation in 2002, the four elections held, there was never a woman candidate for this post. The city will vote for the fifth time on June 21.
According to the returning officer's office sources, 6 people collected nomination papers for the post of general councilor in ward number 25 of the city. Among them, five people submitted their nomination papers. Roksana Begum is the only female candidate among them.
It has been found that in the last four elections, lawyer Roksana Begum participated in the post of councilor in reserved ward number 9 and won three times. Later he became the panel mayor every time. Roksana, the current councilor of reserved ward number 9, is the president of Mahanagar Mahila Dal. Apart from this, he was also the joint convener of the convening committee of the newly ex-metropolitan BNP. Her husband ATM Faiz Uddin is Sylhet District BNP Advisor and former President of District Lawyers Association.
When contacted, Roksana Begum said that although she was elected as a reserved woman councilor three times, she was deprived of sufficient allocation or facilities like ward councilors elected in general seats. Due to this, the development of the area could not work as expected. As a result, he has become a candidate for the post of councilor in the general seat. If the winner, he will build an ideal ward with the well-thought-out advice of the local residents.
Roksana, the councilor of the reduced seat, said, "Many other candidates of BNP have become candidates for the post of councillors. If they compete, I will too. And if they withdraw from the competition, then I will also withdraw.
Polling will be held on June 21 as per the announced schedule. Candidates' nomination papers were selected on Thursday. The nomination papers of six candidates in the general seat were cancelled. However, no candidate's nomination papers were canceled in ward number 25. After allotment of symbols on June 2, candidates can campaign.
