SCC mayor-councilors will take oath today
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will administer the oath to Sylhet Mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury at the Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister's office in Tejgaon of the capital. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury will take oath as mayor of Sylhet City Corporation on Monday (July 3).
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Tajul Islam will administer the oath to general councilors and councilors of reserved seats.On June 26, the oath was confirmed in a notification signed by Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Mahbuba Irene.Meanwhile, despite taking the oath today, Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury is unable to take responsibility as the mayor from now on.
As per section 6 of the Local Government (City Corporation Act), 2009, the elected mayor of Sylhet will have to wait till next October as the term of the first meeting after the first meeting of the corporation is fixed.
Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque took over the current term of Chowdhury on October 8, 2018. Accordingly, his term ends on October 7. After that, Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury will take over as mayor.
It is to be noted that in Sylhet City Corporation elections on June 21, United Kingdom Awami League joint secretary Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury was elected as the mayor with the boat symbol. His nearest rival in the election was Jatiya Party candidate Nazrul Islam Babul. The present mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury did not participate in the election as the BNP boycotted the election as a party.
