24 women arrested in Sylhet

27 members of an inter-district gang of thieves have been caught by the police after coming to steal the annual kirtan of Chaitanya Dev Mahaprabhu temple in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet.

Osmaninagar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police (Golapganj Circle on Additional Duty) Ashrafuzzaman PPM confirmed the matter in a press briefing at Golapganj police station on Monday (April 3). Among those detained are 24 women and three men.

They are - Jahangir Mia's wife Narjin Begum (30), Shahjahan Mia's wife Nazma Begum (32), Shipon Mia's wife Rima Akhtar (28), Nizam Uddin's wife Mahima Akhtar (35), Abdullah's wife Poppi Begum (30) of Dharmandal village in Nasirnagar, Brahmanbaria. , Roni Mia's wife Ayesha Begum (35), Jahangir Mia's wife Sumi Begum (30), Matin Mia's wife Bilkis Begum (28), Hriday Mia's wife Sufia Begum (22), Aziz Uddin's wife Shahida Begum (28) Alfaz Mia's wife Lutfa Begum (25), Subarak Mia's wife Nazma Begum (30), Shamim Mia's wife Roksana Begum (25), Kufad Mia's wife Salma Begum (35), Abdul Chhattar's wife Tashlima Begum (35), Zakaria Hossain's wife Rozina Begum (30), Shaheen Mia's wife Lovely Akhtar (35), Shamsuddin's wife Achma Begum (38), Bachir Mia's wife Parveen Begum (30), Alamgir Mia's wife Tashlima Akhtar (35), Jalil Mia's wife Anufa Akhtar (30), Taher Mia's wife Amena Begum (30) ), Mubarak Mia's wife Fulchan Bibi (28), Tofajzel Mia's wife Achma Begum (25).

The remaining three are Suhail Mia, son of Ijaz Ali of Baghshura village of Madhavpur, Habiganj, Shahin Alam (20), son of Md. Shamim Mia of Fatepur village of the same police station and Chaidul Islam, son of Samchu Mia of Chhattis village of Fenchuganj, Sylhet.

Nine gold chains, one pair of bangles, 4 pairs of bangles, 14 pairs of earrings, eight silver chains, eight silver nupurs, six shells, seven mobile phones and a microbus used for transportation were recovered from them.

In the press conference, Ashrafuzzaman PPM said that the police was able to catch 27 thieves one by one after the news of the loss of various things of the pilgrims coming to the annual kirtan of Chaitanya Dev Mahaprabhu temple. Initially admitting their involvement in the theft, they said that they stole in a gang and all were residents of Dharmandal village under Nasirnagar police station in Brahmanbaria. Basically, they participate in groups in different parts of the country for the purpose of theft. In continuation of this, they came to Sylhet from Brahmanbaria in two cars.

Sylhet District Police Assistant Media Focal Point Officer OC Shyamal Vanik said they were sent to jail by the court on Monday (April 3) afternoon.
