In Sremangal of Moulvibazar, there has been intense sun and heat for the last one week and juicy fruit watermelons are coming to the market during the month of fasting. Due to the recent intense heat and Ramadan, the demand for the seasonal fruit watermelon in Bangladesh has increased tremendously. At the same time, the price has increased.
The sale of watermelons in the markets of Sremangal has started since a few days ago. Many people try to buy this delicious fruit in the summer season and iftar, but due to the high price, many people are unable to buy it. After visiting various fruit shops and markets in Sremangal city, the price of watermelon is on fire in the market. Each watermelon is being sold at the rate of Tk 200 to Tk 500 depending on the size. Watermelon is not seen in all the districts of Sylhet, but traders said that watermelon is being brought from some districts of North Bengal including Sunamganj, Saint Martin and Barisal.
As the reason for the increase in the price, traders said that the price of watermelon is now high due to the high advance yield and transportation cost. However, the price of this fruit will reach the buyers throughout the season.
While buying watermelon on Monday (April 17) afternoon, a government official said, he buys this summer fruit for the family because of the intensity of the heat. Watermelon is at the top of the list of fruits. But because the price is high, not enough can be bought. Sellers are charging sky high prices. As a result, many people are trying to buy to taste the delicious fruit, but because the price is high, most of the buyers are going back without buying.
The buyers are seeking the attention of the Sremangal Upazila administration that the administration should look into the market so that the traders cannot sell watermelons at high prices.
