Video of housewife torture in Kulaura : father-in-law arrested

Police have arrested the father-in-law and husband of the abused housewife after the video of torture of housewife in Kulaura of Moulvibazar went viral.

The name of the arrested father-in-law is Shafiq Mia (63) and the name of the husband is Abdus Salam (32).

In a viral video, it can be seen that Safiq Mia (63), the father-in-law of the housewife in Sultanpur village of Prithimpasha Union of Kulaura police station, is dragging her daughter-in-law from the courtyard of the house while abusing her daughter-in-law with obscene abuse.

Moulvibazar Police Superintendent Mohammad Zakaria said that the victim's elder brother Babul Mia filed a written complaint at the Kulaura police station. There he said that about four years ago, the victim Rujina Begum was married to Abdus Salam, son of Shafiq Mia of Sultanpur village. After marriage, a son was born in their family. After the marriage, the victim's husband Abdus Salam started physically and mentally torturing the victim for dowry. The victim's family could not meet the dowry demand due to financial weakness

The victim's brother, Babul Mia, said that on April 16, around 9:30 p.m., husband Abdus Salam and his son-in-law Ruman Mia had an argument at the victim's father-in-law's house in Sultanpur over the cutting of sherbet packets for Iftar. At one stage of the argument, the victim Rujina Begum was beaten up by the people of her father-in-law's house. The next morning around 6:30 am, the victim was asked by her in-laws to bring one lakh rupees as dowry. When the victim expressed his inability to pay the dowry, the in-laws started beating him up.

Fearing for her life, the victim took refuge in the house of her neighbor Jyotsna Begum, her father-in-law and her husband went to the house of Jyotsna Begum, abused the victim in obscene language and dragged her to her father-in-law's house by holding a handful of her hair and throwing her on the ground. When the victim's brother and relatives went to rescue the victim on hearing this news, the people of the victim's in-laws' house abused them and threw them out of the house. Later, police rescued the victim and brought him to Kulaura Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Police Superintendent Mohammad Zakaria said that Abdus Salam, the victim's husband, was arrested first by conducting an operation in Sultanpur area of Moulvibazar. The arrested accused Abdus Salam was handed over to the court on Tuesday (April 18) morning. Throughout the day, the police conducted an operation to arrest the victim's father-in-law Shafiq Miya (63), the mastermind of the incident. On the basis of secret information and with the help of information technology, the accused Shafiq Mia was arrested from the house of his daughter's son-in-law Shamsul Mia in Ekatuna village of Moulvibazar Sadar.

Superintendent of Police Mohammad Zakaria held a press briefing on this incident on Tuesday (April 18) evening. He said that the victim's mother-in-law and those concerned are under police surveillance. Others will be arrested if necessary. The mother-in-law was not arrested because she was ill. If the court gives instructions, he will also be arrested if necessary.
