Mother, two children missing after being swept away by floodwater
A woman and her two children have gone missing after fierce floodwaters swept them away in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj.
The family was reportedly trying to traverse a flood-hit area in Shalla upazila on Monday evening when they were swept off their feet by the strong current.
According to witnesses, the mother, along with her four-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter, was trying to cross the Shalla Government Degree College bridge from the direction of Raghunathpur village. At that time, the floodwaters were entering the haor beneath the bridge through Bahara road. Despite the strong current, they attempted to wade through the waist-deep water to reach the bridge.
However, they were swept away by the strong current and went missing in surging waters.
Local residents tried desperately to rescue them but were unable to due to the extreme current in the water.
Shalla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Abu Taleb confirmed the incident stating that efforts are ongoing to rescue the missing individuals, although their identities remain unknown.
Shalla police station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam revealed that preliminary inquiries suggest the missing individuals could be from Shashkhai village.
“More details would be available when the members of the victim's family arrive at the police station later in the night,” he added.
